Salt chemistry versus RGB tricks

Darkroom sepia once meant silver halide partially replaced by silver sulfide, so highlights stayed soft while shadows sank into umber. Screen sepia never touches chemistry. Here the tool multiplies each red, green, blue sample through a fixed matrix, then blends the result back toward the source pixels by the percentage you set.

Knowing the difference keeps expectations honest. You still get a believable cast for social posts, genealogy scans, or mood boards. You do not get physical grain, silver edge fog, or paper fibers unless you add those in another step.

Three frames worth comparing out loud

Picture a 900×1200 phone capture of a brick courtyard at noon. Without the split, you might stop at seventy percent intensity because the wall already reads orange. Drag the handle: the sky returns blue on the left while the right side shows the warmed brick. The better stop is often near sixty percent once you see how much yellow the matrix borrows from green.

Second frame: a grayscale scan of a typed letter from 1982. Sepia here is purely cosmetic, yet the warmth buttons matter. Cool bias keeps the page from looking like cardboard stained with tea. Try slight minus first, then open black white if you decide monochrome history beats brown varnish.

Third frame: a product flat-lay for a shop with cream ceramics. Warm plus ten often sells the cozy story, while warm plus twenty turns glaze into butter. When glaze detail clips, walk back to brightness contrast before you push sepia again.

What never leaves your laptop

Warmth bias

Why does my PNG look different in another app?

Displays vary in brightness, and some viewers ignore embedded color profiles. Compare at one hundred percent zoom inside apps you trust, not thumbnails alone.

Does GIF animation survive?

Only the first frame loads into the canvases here. Animated GIFs need a dedicated splitter or editor if you must tone every frame.

Which side is “before” on the split?

Why is export PNG only?

PNG keeps lossless pixels after the math runs, which avoids extra compression surprises while you iterate. Convert to JPEG elsewhere once you like the look.

What happens if I crank warmth and intensity together?
